I'd like to here from others who may have had anything stolen or seen anything or anyone suspicious around the cabins.  I'l like to know if there are others or are we being targeted.  The more reports there are the more chance of these thieves getting caught.

Thoughts from a non resident, regular visitor.

The new sign, is not on the main highway. It is far enough in on the main road that only people who know about Grindstone would even know about it. Unless strangers regularaly travel down that road that far. So not sure why it would make a difference.

Street lights and ashphalt? I hope not. I like to think of the park as a cottage area, not a town area.

Just my thoughts, that's all.

The thefts suck, and hopefully they are few and far between. It is always best when neighbours can watch out for each other. See a strange car, make a note of it. Even if you cannot get a plate number, type and colour will help. So will turning on some lights so they know they are not alone.

No streets lights is fine, it probably keeps everyone in at night as opposed to walking around the development.

No matter how good stuff is locked up if someone really wants it……..

The road is an issue that shouldn't be dictated by a choice group….

First the sign was a request of cottage owners through the Q&A at the AGM if I'm not mistaking.

Second the sign just went up before Grindstone Days yet this problem has been around from day one but increasing as years go on and now people are asking questions mainly because they can now reach us.

Third, there are times when a thief would have the park to themselves it would seem so if you don't want to stolen, lock it up.

Finally street lights are like asphalt, we will not being seeing either for a very long time.

Funny that this has come to light…..

We recently have wondered why it was deemed necessary by the cottage association, or whomever is responsible, for that sign the advertises that there is a "Grindstone Community" off of this long and bumpy road, and it has ocurred to us that this is just an invitiation to bring to someone's attention that there is a large amount of cottages in this area.

Black's Point is the first subdivision to potentially be "checked out" by potential criminals snooping around in the area unless they bother to go further down the road and find all the other subdivisions, potentially the newer areas with higher end cottages and possibly "better stuff".

We don't agree with this sign being put up.   We have heard that certain people don't want the road to be paved to increase access; however I think that this sign is just as bad and isn't needed as it is just an advertisement.

More than likely these individuals who are  steeling, are ones who have visited the area recently as guests, or friends of guests, or maybe someone has figured out not that things are pretty quiet around the cottage developments in Grinstone during the rainy weather or during the week as we have observed.  We also have no street lights at night so that is the perfect setting for them to come back later at night and break in and start taking "bigger stuff".

It is good to be observant of suspicious vehicles and take down the license plate numbers, description of vehicle and occurpants if possible.

The board will be placing notices on all the builletin boards this weekend.  As well, I will be providing an update in the Gazette.

Every so often there seem to be a rash of thefts and no one ever gets caught. It's unnerving as I think we generally think of the cottage development as fairly safe just because there is only the one road.  However, it could also be guests of cottagers as well who have no vested interest in the community. Good point that we should all look out for our neighbours and have an idea of who might be visiting. Over the years if we lent our cottage out to other friends or family members, we generally let our neighbours know. It would also be good to post something in the Gazette so as many cottagers as possible would be aware of any thefts or problems – that way we'd all be more vigilant about watching.

Recently it has come to our attention that there has been an increase in illegal activities in Blacks Point. This past spring it started with someone trying to cut off the lock to the G.C.O.A. shed by the Blacks Point beach which resulted in the purchase of a new lock but no access. Then I hear someones garden hose and power supply for the yard lights has disappeared and someone went as far as to remove a sattelite dish from another cottage. Finally last week someones screened in porch was broken into while they were off running an errand.

I think it is safe to say no stranger would drive up our bumpy gravel road to steal a hose or dish so the offenders are fellow cottage owners or visitors. Please keep an eye out for strangers in your neighbours yards and if required make a note of a license plate or general description if you feel things are not right. Do not confront anyone that is acting suspicious.

If required you can call the RCMP in Arborg at 376-5251

Great post Mollyc!  While I hate the idea of suspecting anyone and everyone, I definitely support us all looking out for one another.  Thanks again!

My husband and I were at our cabin last Monday the 3rd of August.  We were sitting out in our gazebo in the back just after lunch when a car stopped at the end of our neighbors driveway.  They sat for a minute or two and then stopped at the end of our driveway for a minute or two.  Then then drove away but came back a few minutes later.  They sat at the end of the neighbors driveway again for a minute then started to pull in.  When they got to where they could see us they stopped immediately and backed out and then drove away.  It seemed very suspicious to us.  Couldn't get a license number but it was a blue chevy, smaller size car like a Cobalt.  We have reported it to the police and will be keeping an eye out in the future.
