FREE ADMISSION

IMAX Theatre

Tuesday, November 30th

The premiere of "Choking Lake Winnipeg" was followed by audience discussion facilitated by Vicki Burns….Admission to the screening was by invitation only, from The Winnipeg Foundation or from the IISD if you were a Summit participant.

The Lake Winnipeg Foundation apologizes for the confusion that resulted from misinformation that the public could attend the premiere of this film (it has not yet been rated by IMAX for public viewing)

7:15 pm   Red Zone II was the second community forum to be presented by the Lake Winnipeg Foundation.  The forum began with a panel presentation, followed by audience questions and discussion all moderated by the Hon. Gary Filmon.  The panelists included:

Gordon Goldsborough – Wetlands as potential solutions to problems in Lake Winnipeg

Ray Hesslein – System hydrology as a potential solution to problems in Lake Winnipeg

Bob Sandford – Lake Winnipeg – our Black Sea

Tom Simpson – Public-private joint ventures for water quality improvement: pipe dream or possibility?

Hank Venema - Novel solutions to problems in Lake Winnipeg

As the world’s tenth largest lake, Lake Winnipeg is now the most eutrophic with blue-green dominance signifying excess phosphorus loading mainly from diffuse, agricultural sources.  Research is indicating that the hydrology of our major rivers (Red, Winnipeg and Saskatchewan) is responding to climate change and regulation.  Growing public awareness and concern are spurring the governments of Manitoba and Canada to take action.

Red Zone II examined a range of management strategies for consideration in any plan to improve Lake Winnipeg water quality

The public was encouraged to attend and participate in this community forum   …  it was standing room only at the IMAX theatre, and judging by the fact that no one was in a hurry to leave, I guess it was considered pretty interesting!  We filmed the Forum proceedings and these may eventually be available for viewing.  We also plan to eventually post the speakers' talks on our website.  Your feedback on the evening's forum would be very much appreciated!
