Sorry, guys!
I've been updating everywhere else, and forgot about here. I had to change the petition. Some of the geographical facts in the original petition statment were wrong and after a long talk with the Wilderness Committee, we decided that it would likely be ineffectual with the wrong facts in the statement. The program I used for that original petition wouldn't let me change it, so I had to take it down and post a new one. I've been trying to reach all 147 signators ever since. Here is the right link: http://www.ipetitions.com/peti…..ng-out-of/
If you could recirculate this one to your friends, I would really appreciate it. I'm very sorry for the confusion and your support is such a huge boost.
To bring you up to date as to where things are, we now have until Feb 2nd to sign and the WC, LWF, and a few other organizations are pushing to have the government reevaluate the entire peat mining approval process in the light of the fact that there are at least 3 more leases that were granted before the moratorium that now want to go ahead. The total area mined in the Interlake would be about 1/5th the size of Winnipeg. Currently, peat mining only adds about $200,000 a year to MB's economy, and we feel they would be more valuable intact as natural filters and retention areas for our watershed and as massive carbon sinks.
Again, I'm sorry for the confusion and hope that you'll forgive my oversight in letting everyone on this forum know. It's been a lot to juggle this past week. Let's band together on this and I promise from here on out to keep you regularly updated.
Have a lovely day,
Heather

Hey everyone,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Grindstone needs are help. We just received word that an application to start a peat mine along our road in Grindstone in on its way to being approved. This would mean a bunch of heavy machinery tearing up the forest, ripping up the peat in Ramsey Point Bog. Peat Mining is not sustainable. It destroys the bog sometimes forever, changing the watertable and making the area more prone to flooding. The heavy machinery with wreck what is left of our already fragile road.
This process has been chugging along without any consultation with the cottagers or the public and now we're in a time crunch. We have until Jan 15th to let our voices be heard. If you don't want a permanent scar on our park to see everytime you drive to and from the cottage or if you just don't want our road to be ruined, please sign this petition: http://tiny.cc/rzk8i
Thanks for your support.
Your neighbour,
Heather Hinam
