The Manitoba Government is holding public consultations to “seek Manitobans’ perspectives on wetlands”. This is your chance to make sure that your support for wetlands is heard!
Open houses will be held in 10 locations around the province and there will be two open houses at each location, one at 1 pm, the second at 7 pm. There will be a presentation, background information on wetlands will be displayed and attendees will be asked to participate by completing a questionnaire.
The open house schedule is as follows:
June 9 – The Pas – Kikiwak Inn, Highway 10, Opaskwayak Cree Nation
June 10 – Dauphin – Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 309 Main Street North
June 14 – Winnipeg – Finish Line Banquet Room, Assiniboia Downs
June 17 – Thompson – Wildlife Association Hall, Thompson Drive North
June 26 – Lac du Bonnet – Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 45 McArthur Street
July 5 – Arborg – Arborg Bifrost Recreation Centre, 409 Recreation Centre
July 6 – Steinbach – Studio A, Steinbach Arts Council, 304 Second Street
July 8 – Winkler – Winkler Library 160 Main Street South
July 13 – Melita – Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 95 Main Street
July 14 – Brandon – Riverbank Discovery Centre, 1–545 Conservation Drive
Attending one of the consultations is the best way to show the provincial government that wetlands are important to you. The ecological benefits they provide include reducing the impacts of flooding, improving water quality, sequestering carbon and providing habitat for biodiversity. We also encourage you to share this information with friends or groups that you think might also wish to have their support for wetlands heard.
For more information on the public consultations or if you are unable to attend but would still like to voice your support, please review the wetlands workbook and provide input by filling out the questionnaire on the Manitoba Water Council’s website: http://www.manitobawatercouncil.ca. If you would like information on how to help wetlands, please feel free to send me a private message here or email me or call me at 1-800-665-DUCK.
If you only do one thing for the environment in your lifetime, speak out and help conserve Manitoba's wetlands.
